Treatment of People in Chronicle Essay Example
Treatment of People in Chronicle Essay Example Treatment of People in Chronicle Paper Treatment of People in Chronicle Paper Essay Topic: Chronicle Of a Death foretold The novel Chronicle of a death foretold by Gabrià ©l Garcà a Marquà ©z revolves around the death of Santiago Nasar, who is purported to have taken the virginity of his murderersââ¬â¢ sister. The way this man is treated by his killers as well as the members of the town points toward a more general phenomenon of culture that dictates how various types of people are treated in different situations. According to the events of this novel, within the Colombian context, women are treated in specific ways, as are men. The way relatives treat each other is also noteworthy, as it regards the solidarity of familial bonds and the upholding of honor within a particular family circle. The situations, issues, and coincidences of this story can be found to rely upon the policies regarding the treatment of others that tacitly yet inexorably exist within the culture of this Colombian town. Santiagoââ¬â¢s murder is allowed to occur because of a specific form of treatment that is accorded to him by all those who reside in the town. Santiagoââ¬â¢s death could have been prevented, but because of the sentiments that existed toward him, he is allowed to face his attackers in ignorance and unprepared. The people in the town demonstrate a high level of complexity in their treatment of Santiago. On the one hand, several of them considered him astute and powerful enough to take care of himself. Garcà a Marquà ©z writes, ââ¬Å"No one even wondered whether Santiago Nasar had been warned, because it seemed impossible to all that he hadntâ⬠(1984, p. 22). As a rich man, it is also possible that they treated him with respect and considered him well informed and invulnerable to attack. Both Divina Flor and Victoria Guzman, for instance, are knowledgeable concerning the impending murder and also have the opportunity to warn Santiago of his plight. However, these two wome n eventually do nothing, out of a belief that Santiago has everything under control. On the other hand, the people of the town are also highly steeped in a culture that demands honor of all who reside in their society. The possibility that Santiago could have been guilty of taking the virginity of an upstanding female citizen places him in the position of tyrant. Murder as a form of retribution to such a man who would ruin the chances of a woman to marry well and to elevate her head in society may have been considered by all who knew as precisely what he deserved. This analysis appears to be more conducive to the facts. The author even places these words in the mouth of one character: ââ¬Å"there were few of us who didnt know that the Vicario twins were waiting for Santiago Nasar to kill himâ⬠(Garcà a Marquà ©z, 1984, p. 67). This highlights the fact that everyone in the town knew exactly what would happen to Santiago, yet not one of them makes it known to him. Furthermore, the attempts made by some of them to alert Santiago appear to be half-hearted at bes t. Even Colonel Lazaro Aponte who takes the knives from the young men also act in a fashion intended to deter only the most indecisive and spineless murderers. In reality, the citizens of the town treat Santiago as a convicted rapist sentenced to death, and this is proven in that they all come out to witness the murder as though they gather for an execution. In the end, Santiago is treated like an outcast against whom all of society has a personal grievance. The events of the novel are deemed plausible because of the culture that prevailed within the society Garcà a Marquà ©z portrays. The events of the novel turn out the way they do because of a combination of ways in which women are regarded and treated. The twins Pedro and Pablo Vicario are incensed by the fact that someone has taken the virginity of their sister because of the importance placed upon the purity of women in that society. If a woman is somehow shown to be impure, her respectability, along with that of her whole family, vanishes. The women themselves are treated with disgrace- as is Angela when she is beaten and forced to leave the town. Indeed, she is a woman, and in such a culture ââ¬Å"theyââ¬â¢ve been raised to sufferâ⬠(Garcà a Marquà ©z, 1984, p. 34). Without this respectability, she is treated like an outcast and is left without any chance of being honored with the request of marriage. She therefore loses her ability to move upward in life and becom es an old maid who, being unable to provide for herself, becomes a burden to her family. This is the prospect that Angela Vicario faces, and the extent of the disgrace to which she as a woman is to be subjected is mirrored by the drastic nature of the act performed by her brothers in an attempt to defend her honor. The men of the story are treated in a manner that places major responsibilities upon their heads. The responsibility for defending the honor of the family rests squarely upon the shoulders of the men within a given household. Marquà ©z writes of the Vicario family: ââ¬Å"The brothers were brought up to be men. The girls were brought up to be marriedâ⬠(Garcà a Marquà ©z, 1984, p. 34). Such men who conform to what society expects of them are treated with honor. This can be seen in the way that the twins are treated before and after their murder of Santiago. These men, who know the worth of honor in their town, determine to kill Santiago. Yet, despite the fact that a murder is about to be committed, the townspeople (who believe so strongly in the need for men to defend their familyââ¬â¢s honor) do hardly anything to prevent the fateful event from taking place. Even Prudencia Cotes vows never to marry her fiancà © Pablo Vicario if he fails to go through with the plan that would regain his familyââ¬â¢s honor. The communityââ¬â¢s good treatment of men who defend family honor is also demonstrated by the feeble penalties granted the two youths for Santiago Nasarââ¬â¢s gruesome murder. They are given only three years in the local prison- a sentence that acknowledges the evil of murder, but which also lauds the defense of the honor that was the motive for the murder. The treatment of people within Gabrià ©l Garcà a Marquà ©zââ¬â¢s novel Chronicle of a death foretold shows the town to be occupied by citizens overcome by an old-fashioned tradition of valor, dignity and honor. The fact that Santiago may have been responsible for taking a womanââ¬â¢s virginity causes him to be effectively ostracized from society, so that the news known by all of his impending murder is kept from him- to his detriment. The good faith and support of the community for the Vicario twins also demonstrates that societyââ¬â¢s treatment of men, of whom honor is expected, and to whom respect is accorded when they demonstrate themselves willing and able to defend family honor. The treatment of women in this society also demonstrates itself in the strict lifestyles to which they are forced to adhere and the extreme measures that must be taken whenever their actions (or those of another) cause them to stray. How to Become a Flight Attendant 13 Expert Tips
How to Become a Flight Attendant 13 Expert Tips SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Do you dream of traveling for work, touching down in a new city every day and experiencing different cultures regularly? Do you love helping people, and live for customer interactions (even the not-so-pleasant ones)? If so, you might want to consider a career as a flight attendant. Despite their glamorous TV and movie reputation, flight attendant jobs are difficult. Theyââ¬â¢re also competitive to get. In this article, Iââ¬â¢ll break down how to become a flight attendant by first deciding if a job as a flight attendant is right for you and, if so, how to apply for flight attendant jobs. Becoming a flight attendant is an exciting, unique career path that has the potential to transform your life. Interested in Becoming a Flight Attendant? Consider These Questions First Flight attendant jobs are exciting, unique, and well-respected. They can also be exhausting and intense and require you to make significant sacrifices in your personal life. Before beginning the lengthy application process to be a flight attendant, consider these questions. Are You Okay With Working Long, Difficult Hours? A flight attendantââ¬â¢s schedule, at best, includes long, difficult work days. At worst, a flight attendantââ¬â¢s schedule can be unpredictable and exhausting. Once becoming a flight attendant, youââ¬â¢ll be responsible for having specific days where youââ¬â¢ll have scheduled trips to complete. Youââ¬â¢ll also be responsible for a handful of days each month where you must be on-call to jump on a trip if required. Your on days, and your on-call days, can be any days - weekdays, weekends, holidays, etc. As a first year flight attendant, youââ¬â¢ll likely have to be on or on call for most major travel days, and have less seniority in picking which trips to fly. That means that youââ¬â¢ll probably be working on holidays and almost definitely be working on at least some weekends. The trips you take will often be extremely difficult and tiring on your body. If you mainly fly short, national flights, youââ¬â¢ll likely have two or more flights in a day and be responsible for overseeing the customer service needs of hundreds of customers. If you fly international trips, youââ¬â¢ll probably only have to fly one trip a day, but youââ¬â¢ll typically have a quick turnaround time before you have to be on your next flight. The toll of traveling to so many different places so quickly can heavy on your body, as youââ¬â¢ll often be adjusting to different time zones and getting up extremely early or staying up very late. Are You Able to Commit to an Intense Training Process? Flight attendant training is a long, intense process. For flight attendant training, youââ¬â¢ll need to move to a specified training location, where youââ¬â¢ll live with other flight attendant trainees for the duration of the training, which can last for several months. Most airlines only have two or three training facilities, so youââ¬â¢ll likely be far away from home for the entirety of your training. Training days themselves are mentally and physically exhausting. Youââ¬â¢ll be learning rules about how to keep people safe in the air, as well as practicing the physical skills youââ¬â¢ll need to help pack the planes or conduct safe evacuations. Would You Be Okay Moving For Work? Airlines have hubs where many of their flights originate, and their flight crews are often required to live nearby so that they can be ready to jump on a flight at a momentââ¬â¢s notice. If you donââ¬â¢t live near your airlineââ¬â¢s hub, youââ¬â¢ll likely have to move, at least for the part of the month where youââ¬â¢re on-call. That can mean leaving your friends and family behind for large amounts of time. Do You Like Dealing With Customers? As a flight attendant, youââ¬â¢ll have to deal with customers all the time - and they wonââ¬â¢t always be pleasant or happy to work with you. If you donââ¬â¢t like dealing with customers, being a flight attendant probably isnââ¬â¢t the right job for you. How to Become a Flight Attendant: Flight Attendant Requirements Still want to be a flight attendant? Applying for a job as a flight attendant is highly competitive. For instance, Delta regularly receives 100,000 applications during its open enrollment periods, from which they only accept several hundred trainees. Many airlines have strict requirements for their flight attendants. In this section, Iââ¬â¢ll talk about what some of those requirements are. Keep in mind, however, that every airline has different requirements of its attendants. Flight Attendant Requirements for Minimum Age All airlines have minimum age requirements from applicants. These can range from 18 to 21 years old, depending on the airline. There is no maximum age requirement for flight attendants at any US airline. Flight Attendant Requirements for Physical Ability One of the greatest myths about being a flight attendant is that you need to be a beautiful supermodel in order to be a flight attendant. Not true! Airlines donââ¬â¢t have physical appearance requirements, but they do want you to look neat and well groomed. Normally, airlines tend to look for conservative, classic styles of dress and appearance. That means that your hair should be dyed a natural color and you shouldnââ¬â¢t have any visible tattoos or piercings, besides ears. In terms of height and weight, airlines require that youââ¬â¢ll be able to reach the overhead bins to store luggage and that you can fit into the jump-seat easily. Other than that, there are no hard or fast cutoffs for height or weight. Airlines require their flight attendants to have 20/20 vision, which can be achieved either naturally or through the use of contacts and/or glasses. Finally, some airlines may require you to undergo a medical or physical fitness test to ensure that youââ¬â¢re in good enough health to fulfill the jobââ¬â¢s requirements. Flight Attendant Requirements for Education All US airlines require that you have a high school diploma or GED to apply. You must also be able to pass a full background check and drug screening. How to Become a Flight Attendant: Finding a Job Flight attendant jobs can be difficult to find. Airlines often have hiring windows throughout the year during which they accept applications. Very few US airlines are hiring year-round. To that end, here are some tips for finding the flight attendant job of your dreams. Decide Which Airlines Youââ¬â¢d Like to Work For First, you should decide what airlines youââ¬â¢d like to fly for. All of the US airlines are very different. When considering which airline youââ¬â¢d like to fly with, think about the following questions. #1: Where do I want to fly? Not every airline flies the same places. If youââ¬â¢ve got your heart set on making it out to the Pacific Northwest, make sure youââ¬â¢re applying to an airline that flies there.#2: Whatââ¬â¢s my customer service philosophy? Each airline has its own philosophy about customer service. Read up on the airlines to see which matches your own customer service philosophy.:3: Whatââ¬â¢re other flight attendants saying about working for this airline? You can use online company review sites like Glassdoor to get a sneak peek into what itââ¬â¢s like to work at a different airline. These reviews can help you see the positives and negatives a company, so you can make a more informed decision about where to apply. Always take these reviews with a grain of salt, howeverââ¬âjust because someone else had a bad experience, doesnââ¬â¢t mean you will, too. Use Job Search Sites Job sites like Indeed.com and Monster.com can help you find out when companies are hiring flight attendants. You can also check Flight Attendant Career, a website that provides information about open applicant periods for all airlines in one place. Check the Websites of Airlines Youââ¬â¢re Interested In Another great way to find flight attendant jobs is to watch the websites of the airlines that youââ¬â¢re interested in applying to. Theyââ¬â¢ll often have information about open positions on their sites. How to Become a Flight Attendant: Applying for Jobs As I mentioned, applying to be a flight attendant is very competitive. In this section, Iââ¬â¢ll talk about how you can stand out from the crowd during the application and interview process. How to Present a Polished Flight Attendant Application Hiring managers at airlines have to look through hundreds of thousands of applications. Here are a few tips to make your application stand out. Show Off Your Skills Airlines are often looking to hire flight attendants who have special skills, like exceptional customer service ability or a passion for travel. If youââ¬â¢ve proven yourself to be able to work with people in different situations, youââ¬â¢ll definitely want to highlight this on your application. For instance, if youââ¬â¢ve encountered and had to serve people from different backgrounds in a previous job, itââ¬â¢ll show that youââ¬â¢ve got what it takes to deal with people. Similarly, airlines are looking for candidates who will enjoy traveling, which will obviously be a large part of your job description. If youââ¬â¢ve traveled a lot, highlight that, even if itââ¬â¢s in a later section of your resume, such as personal interests or skills. Finally, if youââ¬â¢re looking to fly internationally, fluency in another language can help you truly stand out from the pack, as youââ¬â¢ll have to help customers whose first language isnââ¬â¢t English. Make sure that your application reflects any unique skills you have thatââ¬â¢ll help you standout from the crowd. Highlight Your Experience If you have previous experience as a flight attendant or in other high-stress customer service fields, make sure you note that on your application and resume. Airlines are looking for flight attendants whoââ¬â¢ll be able to provide exceptional customer service to all of their customers. When highlighting your customer service experience, make sure you provide context. For instance, if youââ¬â¢ve worked in a shop before, quantify the number of customers you dealt with on busy days, whichââ¬â¢ll show that you can handle numerous customer interactions in one day. Even if youââ¬â¢ve worked in a less relevant position, highlight how youââ¬â¢ve had to be flexible and helpful to different groups of people. Check Your Application Carefully Because hiring managers need to quickly screen hundreds of thousands of candidates at one time, youââ¬â¢ll need to make sure that your application is free of errors or mistakes that may automatically disqualify you from the position. Check for typos or other easy-to-correct errors thatââ¬â¢d make your application look less professional. Make Sure You Fulfill the Requirements Before applying, make sure you fulfill all the requirements for employment. For instance, if the airline requires that you have a passport, make sure youââ¬â¢ve got one. If you donââ¬â¢t, the hiring managers will likely get rid of your application right away. How to Stand Out at Your Interviews Flight attendant interview days can be stressful affairs. Youââ¬â¢ll often be interviewed amongst hundreds of your peers whoââ¬â¢re applying for the same limited spots. Follow these tips to stand out from the pack. Make Sure You Look Professional As I mentioned previously, airlines place a high value on having their flight attendants be neatly groomed. Make sure youââ¬â¢re wearing a professional outfit, that your hair is neatly combed, and that you are awake and alert during the interview. Practice Flight Attendant Skills Airlines may have you demonstrate flight attendant skills during your interview, such as making an announcement on the PA loudspeaker of an airplane or dealing with an unruly customer. Prepare for these scenarios ahead of time by practicing what youââ¬â¢d say over the loudspeaker (remember to speak slowly and clearly) or how youââ¬â¢d deal with an angry customer. Coming in prepared for any scenario will help you stand out and give you a sense of calm during the interview process. Demonstrate That You Can Work Well As Part of a Team Flight attendants are part of a team. They work with other flight attendants on the plane, as well as with the captains and first officers who fly the planes. Make sure that you demonstrate your ability to be a good teammate during the interview process. Be prepared to highlight specific examples from your previous work where youââ¬â¢ve had to collaborate with other employees or positively resolve a workplace conflict. If there are any group activities, treat your other applicants cordially and respectfully, even though youââ¬â¢re competing for the same job. Training to be a Flight Attendant Once youââ¬â¢ve been provisionally hired as a flight attendant, you still have to complete the long and difficult training. Not everyone whoââ¬â¢s accepted to training makes its all the way through to officially become a flight attendant. Knowing what youââ¬â¢ll face when going into training can help prepare you. Flight attendant training is an intense, multi-week program. Youââ¬â¢ll be in training from anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. Youââ¬â¢ll likely have to move away from home to be at the training, which means youââ¬â¢ll be away from your friends and family. Your training will consist of educational and physical portions. Youââ¬â¢ll learn about the codes, rules, regulations, and theories you need to know to safely transport passengers from one place to another. Youââ¬â¢ll also go through the physical requirements of being a flight attendant. Youââ¬â¢ll learn how to evacuate a flight, how to stow and remove luggage, and how to protect and see to passengers in the event of an emergency. To complete your training, youââ¬â¢ll be required to pass a safety, emergency, and evacuation test administered by the FAA. For most airlines, you must pass with a 90% or higher in order to be accepted as a flight attendant. Review: Is a Career as a Flight Attendant Right for You? If youââ¬â¢re wondering how to become a flight attendant, itââ¬â¢s first important to understand if being a flight attendant is right for you. Flight attendant jobs are quite difficult, and the path to becoming a flight attendant is long and competitive. Make sure that your application is polished and competitive so that you standout from the pack.

English Speech Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
English Speech - Essay Example But despite that swearing has always been an inseparable part of our culture, and most others for that matter, so even those of us who would wish to ban swearing as such will likely have to come to terms with its existence while man exists. So, on ground of this, let us take a closer look at the phenomenon of swearing and its place within our and other cultures. We start with defining this term. Swearing is normally understood as a profane expression through usage of a word or phrase normally associated with indecency. At the same time, quite ironically, swearing once signified telling the truth by making an oath. At this point we can immediately see how both those definitions of swearing combine in the real life and give us a better hand at defining what swearing actually is - a formally obscene verbal expression, which nevertheless may uncover a truth about our feelings as far as it conveys our emotions. Therefore, swearing clearly belongs to a group of cultural habits of a given s ociety, and different societies allow for a varying degree of freedom of expression of its members. However, it is here that the real difficulty may arise because in the modern globalized world, where we often communicate with representatives of other cultural traditions, cultural diversity creates potential for confusion due to the differences in attitudes to swearing and to the existence of different forms of swearing. For instance, you should always keep in mind that if you call a Chinese person a turtle, which is maybe not the most pleasant comparison for people in our society but still definitely not an insulting one, then you may become his or her worst enemy, because this innocuous creature represents one of the worst offences in China. Or, speaking about a much closer to us British culture, using the word 'bugger,' acceptable in the United States, would cast a shadow on your politeness as you would be understood as talking about a sodomite. If you were to live before 1934 you could even be imprisoned for uttering this word (Bryson 1991, p.224). And, as we have mentioned the history of attitudes to swearing, it must be noted that we are quite lucky today that we have a relative freedom of expression, because in the nineteenth century there were such intense attempts to clear out English of swearing that even some traditional words from the old English were being changed, like transformation of 'titbit' into 'tidbit' (Bryson 1991, p.221). So, as we can see, the phenomenon of swearing went as far as even modifying our language. But what fuels the mentioned longevity of the presence of swearing as seemingly unavoidable cultural trait of most societies is its arguably positive ability to serve as a channel through which we may relieve our feelings. Ironically, the very forbidden status of profane words and expressions makes them very emotive, which then perpetuates their forbidden status. And what works is normally extensively used, therefore most people from time to time express their anger, dissatisfaction, or other impulsive emotion with the help of swearing, which, paradoxically, sometimes is sufficient to dismiss the cause of our vexation as a thing of the past. Of course, this does not concern damnable, sorry for this term, cases when some people are so accustomed to swearing that it constitutes a large part of their language. After all, to turn our mother tongue into a continual swearing would mean to strip swearing of the large part of its power. The

Factors That Contributed To Industrial Revolution In Britain Essay
Factors That Contributed To Industrial Revolution In Britain - Essay Example Important conditions that favored the growth of industrialization in Europe include capitalism, a growth of population, peace and increased cross-border markets for industrial goods. Capitalism encouraged people to own private property and make beneficial contracts among themselves. They realized that there was the need to work harder with the objective of acquiring more property. Capitalism was a motivation that enhanced peopleââ¬â¢s desire towards making inventions since it was the only way towards wealth accumulation. The growth of population in Britain provided the necessary labor for industries and guaranteed a local market for goods and services. Increased labor and demand constituted the primary motivators for an industrial revolution. Britain peace and tranquility prevailed in Britain; this provided a favorable environment for industrial growth. Industrial investors no longer feared destruction of their property caused by conflicts and wars. People, therefore, volunteered to install machinery for industrial production with no fear of destructive activities. International demand for industrial goods was increasing at high rates as people desired to make their lives easy through the use of machinery. This provided opportunities for marketing Britainââ¬â¢s industrial goods. Increased markets encouraged more production and accelerated industrial revolution. Industrial revolution marked a major turning point in history because it influenced approximately all aspects of peopleââ¬â¢s daily lives.

SO Jewett Nature :: essays papers
SO Jewett Nature The Conception of Nature and its Relationship to Gender in S.O. Jewett^Ãâs story "A White Heron." "Nature, in the common sense, refers to the essences unchanged by man^Ãâ¦" From the very first steps of the new settlers on the American continent, its uncivilized nature, full of smell of the forests, of freshness of the air, and of almost prelapsarian variety of flora and fauna, came to be associated with unlimited wilderness. However, under the vigorous attack of developing civilization the untouched virginity of the New World soon began to recede, irretrievably losing its wild independent beauty. For a great number of American writers this confrontation of nature with civilization became a theme for the never-ending discussion. The short story of an American writer regionalist Sarah Orne Jewett, "A White Heron", is one of the works written on this touching American theme. In this story the author presents the conflict by juxtaposing a little country-girl Sylvia, who lives in harmony with nature, to the bird-hunter from a town. She does so through identification of a girl with nature and boys ^ with civilization. While the girl stands for the innoc ent femininity of natural world, who loves and cares about the creatures around, the boys are associated with aggression, danger and warlike elements of civilization. Thus she implies the idea that nature is just like a harmless little girl just exists in peace with every tiny thing around, while civilization, like a young man with a gun, by its utilitarian love for nature senselessly annihilates the artless creation. From the opening lines of the story Sarah Orne Jewett ushers her readers into the magic world of untouched beauty of the "New England wilderness" (WH, p.200): "the woods were already filled with shadows one June evening^" (WH, p.197). The reader is immediately charmed and has no choice but to proceed, to walk further, among the trees, until he meets a little girl, walking by the forest path together with her "plodding" (WH, p.

Urban Renewal
What is Urban renewal? Discuss the issues and strategies of urban renewal of a state capital. Urban renewal is a program of land re-development in areas of moderate to high density urban land use. It can be envisaged as the physical and infrastructural changes in land use, built environment or intensity of the use of land or building that could be considered as inevitable outcome of the action from economic, social, political, technical and environmental forces acting upon urban areas at different times of its existence. It is a program designed to help communities improve and revitalize areas that have deteriorated, are unsafe and/ or show signs of economic or physical conditions that are detrimental to the community as a whole. Urban renewal could be in the form of: -Physical change: Part of land is developed as a multistory building. -Infrastructural change: widening of roads, introduction of metro-rail, etc. -Change in land use: function of building changes, keeping the structure same eg residential to commercial -Change in built form: increase in no. of storeys. Change in environment: congestion on road cleared, trees planted , garbage removed, etc. In the second half of the 20th century, renewal often resulted in the creation of urban sprawl and vast areas of cities being demolished and replaced by freeways and expressways, housing projects, and vacant lots, some of which still remain vacant at the beginning of the 21st century. Urban renewal's effect on actual revitalization is a subject of intense debate. It is seen by proponents as an economic engine, and by opponents as a regressive mechanism for enriching the wealthy at the expense of taxpayers and the poor.It carries a high cost to existing communities, and in many cases resulted in the destruction of vibrantââ¬âif run-down ââ¬âneighborhoods. Urban renewal in its original form has been called a failure by many urban planners and civic leaders, and has since been reformulated with a focus on r edevelopment of existing communities. Over time, urban renewal evolved into a policy based less on destruction and more on renovation and investment, and today is an integral part of many local governments, often combined with small and big business incentives. But even in this adapted form, Urban Renewal projects are still widely accused of abuse and corruption. Behind the idea of urban renewal was a belief that if the government removed people from such places and put them in better places, it would improve not only their lives and their self-image, but also their behavior. This idealistic philosophy became common in America by the end of World War I. IMPORTANCE OF URBAN RENEWAL Urban renewal is critical to the success of local communities and the long-term prosperity of citizens living in urban areas.Without urban renewal, there would be no incentive for developers to tackle the challenges associated with redevelopment, and deteriorating downtown areas would be subject to increase d crime and safety problems, while continued growth on the fringes of communities would add to the problem of urban sprawl. NEED FOR URBAN RENEWAL ââ¬â Rise in land value ââ¬â Expansion of service centers ââ¬â Change in transportation mode ââ¬â Latest realization of global energy scenario. BENEFITS OF URBAN RENEWALProviding matching funds for money from other sources (such as state or federal grants) Funding infrastructure, which brings additional funds to the community through permit fees, system development charges (SDCs), water and sewer hook? up charges, etc. Increasing the value of property next to the urban renewal district. Improving the quality of life through new or renovated parks, roadways, civic and cultural facilities, and expanded economic development OBJECTIVES OF URBAN RENEWAL ââ¬â To eliminate sub optimal uses To create conditions for efficient and economic use of scarce and costly urban infrastructure. ââ¬â To improve the efficiency of urban system ââ¬â To reduce social cost of urban development and arrange for cross financing Urban renewal also took hold in medium sized cities, many of which used urban renewal laws to pay for public housing, new bridges, and new thoroughfares. There was a time when the phrase ââ¬Å"urban renewalâ⬠was a popular one. But today it often carries a negative connotation, regardless of the truth, however, urban renewal did a lot to change cities.Chicago's now demolished Cabrini-Green housing project, one of many urban renewal efforts. Issue: -Cities unfortunately with some exceptions, have not been enabled to look inward and build on their inherent capacities, both financial and technical, and instead are still being seen in many states as ââ¬Ëwardsââ¬â¢ of the State governments. -A major failure of city governance has been our inability to address the needs of the poor ââ¬â basic services like drinking water supply, sanitation, housing and social services are not availa ble to an increasing share of urban population. The urban renewal of a state capital involves: Working: The basic idea behind urban renewal is simple: future tax revenues pay for revitalization efforts. The City Council, acting on the recommendations of a community based steering committee and PDC, draws a line around an area (the urban renewal boundary) and identifies desirable improvements within that area (the urban renewal plan). The city issues urban renewal bonds to pay for the identified improvements. As property values increase in the area due to new investment, the rise in property tax revenues (called ââ¬Å"tax incrementâ⬠) is used to pay off the urban renewal bonds. This financing method is called tax-increment financing, and it is the most common method of paying for improvements in an urban renewal area. Kind of projects : Urban renewal funds can be used for a variety of capital investments, such as: Redevelopment projects, such as projects near light rail that combine retail and residential components. Economic development strategies, such as small-business loans or loan programs tied to family-wage jobs. Housing loans and other financial tools for ownership and rental housing which serve a variety of income levels. Streetscape improvements, including new lighting, trees, sidewalks, pedestrian amenities, etc. Transportation enhancements, including light rail, streetcar, intersection improvements, etc. Parks and open spaces.Roots of urban renewal : Urban renewal emerged in the late 1940s as an attempt to revitalize central cities, which were losing population and resources to new post-war suburbs. Until the 1960s, urban renewal was a federal program used to clear large areas of land largely to provide what was then considered to be improved hou sing conditions for thousands of people. It also funded large projects such as hospitals, highways and civic centers. The funding mechanisms and purposes of urban renewal changed in its early decades, but the term broadly referred to a set of programs and policies meant to counter inner-city disinvestment and reinvigorate declining downtown areas. Criteria : Urban renewal areas must show evidence of some degree of blight, demonstrated by conditions such as poorly constructed buildings, faulty planning, lack of open spaces, deteriorated properties, an incompatible mix of uses and improper utilization of land. -Urban renewal areas, their principles and the specific projects funded by them are conceived in consultation with citizen committees who represent a broad spectrum of community interests. In addition, three public bodies must approve any new urban renewal area: the Portland Development Commission, the Portland Planning Commission, and City Council. -In urban renewal areas, publ ic investment is used to stimulate private investment on a much larger scale. The amount of urban renewal funds invested in any one area is small compared to the private investment that follows. -Urban renewal is primarily used to update and improve an area's infrastructure ââ¬â through capital expenditures on transportation improvements and parks for example ââ¬â and to provide incentives for desired development such as affordable housing, family-wage jobs and building refurbishment. -Urban renewal is designed to benefit all people within the urban renewal area, in surrounding neighborhoods and throughout the city and metropolitan area. -The urban renewal plan, which guides all public spending in the area, is conceived by citizens who are best able to make decisions about how to improve their neighborhood. Urban renewal can be a strong and effective tool to protect long-term affordability in revitalizing neighborhoods by financing the construction of affordable housing. -Urb an renewal works to revitalize communities within the existing built environment. -Promote livelihood opportunities through skill building and enhancement of entrepreneurship. Enable public private partnership arrangement covering infrastructure development and service delivery. -The realization of the overall programme goal of improving the quality of life for all is possible only through the framework of long term development plan, replacing the narrow project based approach.

In the book, Catcher in the Rye, wrote by J.D. Salinger has used the term phony to address people, objects, and situations that are brutal. Holdenrs way of saying phony is when someone acts fake. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Book Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger" essay for you Create order He thinks that when people try to portray someone who their not are phonies to him. Holden is suggesting that rejects them as humans since they arent normal like him. Holden can see the ideal conflict of our hypocritical world that we live in. He accepts that the adults are too phony that they cant really see their own. He doesnt want a future for himself because he knows that one day he will become an adult and he will be like the rest of them. In his eyes and thoughts, growing up means that he will become a phony and when holden meets someone new, he can tell if they are phonies or not. Holden didnt hesitate when he called Mr. Ossenburger, an alumnus at Pencey who made cash by executing cheap funeral and he would talk about praying to God and achieving in life before you can donate the money to Pencey and having a building named after him, a phony. In chapter 3 Holden said he would show up to school in this big goddam Cadillac, and we all had to stand up in the grandstand and give him a locomotivethats a cheer (p16). Holden is calling him a phony because Mr. Ossenburger always talked about how he was never ashamed as well as praying to Jesus, but he uses funerals as an opportunity to take advantage of the families who are mourning on there lost members behalf. He would always see it as a business and an easy way to make money, but Holden refers to him as cheat for talk about something he himself doesnt follow. Holden thinks that itrs phony to show respect to someone who doesnt even follow his own beliefs and who finds a way to bargain people while at the same time hers making money from it. The fact that one man is getting rich of off dead people is one example of phoniness in this world. Also, the school that Holden goes to is also phony for naming a dorm after Mr.Ossenburger for the purpose that he gave them money. Holden has two preferences on phoniness which are to lie and to continue being a kid mentally not physically. Holden mentioned that he is the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life(p16). As Holden continues to believe this, he is being a crook and is also fighting against the inevitable. He is trying to dodge phoniness by any means. Holden thinks that by not growing up he will continue to be innocent and real but in reality, he cant avoid growing up. He is deceitful to himself and the more he keeps lying to himself, the more he is going to fail in life. Hers already irresponsible, in the way he spends his money and the attempt he puts into school, violent, and immature, for having the understanding that he doesnt want to grow up. I think that Holdenrs fear of becoming a phony is bigger than that. Since Holden thinks that adults are phony, he struggles to grow up and stumbles to join with the rest of them in the world. His alternative would be to conserve his innocence since it rs the opposite to phoniness and the only way that people can be genuine. Holden thinks a lot about Phoebes childhood innocence. In Chapter 10, Holden mentions his sister. Youd like her. I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell youre talking about. I mean you can even take her anywhere with you. Holden has a lot of fondness for his sister and they connect so well. She is one of the few people he doesnt consider as phony. Phoebes actions show Holden how angelic she is compared to the outside world, the adult world that takes innocence. If Phoebe were to enter our world, she would end up turning phony. By these means, Holden does not want to be phony. But yet again, itrs irresistible because hers already one for being a crook and trying to avoid adulthood.
